Ch19: Angiosperms Intro Flashcards
What are the fertile parts of the flower?
Stamens and carpels.
What is the collective name for all petals?
corolla
What is the collective name for all sepals?
Calyx
What is the collective name for all petals and sepals together?
perianth
Where are the microsporangia located in flowers?
The two lobed anther contains four microsporangia (pollen sacks)
What is found within the gynoecium of a flower?
Gynoecium = house of woman
Carpels are collectively called the gynoecium (collection of pistils are also gynoecium). Megasporophyll folded lengthwise enclosing one or more ovules.
What is a perfect flower?
Includes BOTH stames and carpels.
- Bisexual
What is an imperfect flower?
Either stemens or carpels missing.
- unisexual
What is staminate?
Only stamen present, missing carpals
What is carpellate?
Only carpel present, missing stamens.
What are the four floral whorls?
- sepals
- petals
- stamens
- carpels
Complete vs incomplete.
Complete contains all four floral whorls.
Incomplete lack any of them.
What is the difference between epigynous, hypogynous and perigynous? How does this correspond to inferior and superior ovaries?
Hypogynous flower: flower is below ovary (supreior ovary)
Epigynous flower: Flower is above ovary (inferior ovary)
Perigynous flower: intermediate conditions
What does the angiosperm ovary develop into?
Fruit
What is found within an angiosperm pollen grain?
Large vegetative/tube cell and a small generative cell.
Outer wall (exine) and inner wall (intine). The exine contains sporopollenin, which protects the pollen grain from UV, dehydration, and pathogens.
