ch3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a research design?
A
A plan for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data
- Research questions determine the type of research design
- Constraints should be known from the start (e.g. money, time)
2
Q
Critical research design decisions
A
- Choosing between (deductive) research strategies
- Choosing between statistical techniques
- Choosing between sampling designs
3
Q
Two types of deductive research strategies
A
- Causal research
* Correlational research
4
Q
Research strategies
A
- Lab experiments
- Field experiments
- Archival research
- Survey research
5
Q
Conditions for causality
A
- X and Y co-occur
- A logical explanation for the effect of X on Y
- X precedes Y in time
- There is no other cause (Z) that explains the co-occurance of X and Y
6
Q
Causal research
A
- Lab experimental research
- Artificial environment
- In which one or more IVs are manipulated
- after which the effect on the DV is measured
- Field experiments
- An experiment carried out in the natural environment
- in which work/life goes on as usual
- but manipulation is possible
7
Q
Correlational research
A
- Archival research
-External archival research
(data generated by sources outside the firm, e.g. stock price data)
-Internal archival research
existing company data (e.g. sales) - Survey research
- based on a questionnaire to which respondents record their answers, typically with closely defined alternatives
8
Q
Overarching group labels
A
Examples:
personal characteristics: age, living situation, # of children at home
work related factors: work satisfaction, attitude towards job
9
Q
multi-item scales
A
are multiple questions that jointly measure one variable
