Group
Group that usually defines common goals in writing
Formal Group
Group that defines common goals in a less formal manner
Informal Group
Research on formal and informal groups has revealed two important facts:
- Informal subgroups form within all formal groups
- The informal subgroup may have greater influence on the productivity and success of the formal group than does any other factor
Five essential characteristics of a group
- Common binding interest
- Vital group image
- Sense of continuity
- Shared set of values
- Different roles within the group
The members of the group must recognize the existence of their group and take pride in it
Vital Group Image
The members of the group must be drawn together by some common interest that is important to them on some level
Common Binding Interest
Esprit de corps
Positive self image (morale)
Members of the group must believe in the continued existence of the group
Sense of Continuity
A broad term used for a variety of procedures designed to help individuals adjust to certain situations and a means of either reinforcing correct behavior or eliminating improper behavior
Counseling
An intensive process of directing the skills performance of an individual
Coaching
A process that involves having members of the unit assist each other in learning
Peer Assistance
Formal Coaching Model (4 steps)
- Describe the current level of performance
- Describe the desired level of performance
- Gain a commitment for change
- Follow up the commitment
Someone who is equal in status either socially or psychologically to another
Peer
A process that places a new subordinate under the guidance of a more experienced professional who acts as tutor, guide, and motivator
Mentoring
The primary purpose of mentoring
To prepare employees for advancement within the organization through the direction of a positive role model
Three goals of mentoring programs
- Enhance management skills
- Improve productivity
- Encourage diversity
Situations in which personnel might be formally evaluated (5)
- When they are hired
- During their probationary period
- Annually as part of a performance review
- For promotional purposes
- For disciplinary or termination purposes
This can be one of the most subjective activities that company officers perform
Personnel evaluation process
Three levels of progressive discipline
- Preventive action
- Corrective action
- Punitive action
An attempt to correct inappropriate behavior as soon as it is discovered to prevent it from becoming a pattern or progressing to a more serious offense
Preventive action
Used as the second step when an employee repeats a violation for which preventive action was taken or commits a different violation
Corrective action
Step used when an employee either continues to exhibit inappropriate behavior despite earlier corrective efforts or commits a very serious violation of organizational rules as a first offense
Punitive action
