Ch2 : Protista (Amoeba) Flashcards
What kingdom?
Protista
Autotroph or heterotroph
omnivore, carnivore or herbivore
Heterotroph
Omnivore
Name the parts of the Amoeba
-Cell membrane
-cytolpasm(endoplasm and ectoplasm)
-Nucleus
-Waste products
-Pseudopodia
-Fat droplets
-Food vacuole
-Contractile vacuole
Describe the cytoplasm
-Ectoplasm (outer): clear and stiff
-Endoplasm (inner): grainy due to food vacuoles and waste, more fluid, contains fat droplets
Describe the contractile vacuole
-Function: osmoregulation
-Needed because amoeba live in freshwater, so their cytoplasm is more concentrated than the environment (amoeba would burst)
Explain the process of osmoregulation
- Water enters due to osmosis
- Excess water enters the contractile vacuole
- Contractile vacuole swells
- Contractile vacuole touches the cell membrane
- Contractile vacuole expels excess water
Describe the food vacuoles
-Secretes acids and enzymes to kill and digest prey
-Digested material is absorbed from the food vacuoles into cytoplasm
Describe the pseudopodia
-They extend in the direction amoeba wants to move
-Endoplasm flows into pseudopodia to allow cell to move
-Also used to surround prey
