Q

What is CHS geometry? pg75-76

A

A method of giving addresses to each sector of a HDD. The format is Cylinder/Head/sector, to find the total amount of space on a drive use this equation: CH = total tracks(T), Ts(sectors per track) = total sectors(S)/2 = #ofKB/1024 = #ofMB/1024 = #ofGB on the drive.

Q

What are Clusters/Allocation Units pg76

A

A configured group of sectors. A cluster is the smallest amount of logical space that can be allocated to hold a file(Thus large clusters holding small files wastes disk space). No two files are allowed to occupy the same sector/cluster.

Q

What are Solid State Drives(SSDs) pg77-78

A

Have no moving parts, but use the same solid-state memory technology as other forms of flash memory. All solid-state memory is limited to a finite number of write/erase operations. Generally faster than HDDs.
