CH 20 BB Flashcards
How do servers help improve network security and administration? Pg 956
By centralizing control of resources and security.
What are dedicated servers? Pg 956
Servers dedicated to a specific task, such as hosting a website.
What are non-dedicated servers? Pg 956
Servers that may perform multiple tasks, such as hosting a website and serving as the administrator’s daily workstation.
What is the benefit of dedicated vs non-dedicated servers? Pg 956
Non-dedicated servers require more resources to support all the different tasks they must accomplish. Dedicated servers can allocate all of their resources into one function.
T/F Servers can be used as firewalls Pg 957
True, but a server being used as a firewall should not have any other data on it.
When should a server be in the DMZ versus in the internal network? Pg 957
A server should be in the DMZ if said server needs to be accessed by the outside world. A server should be on the internal network if it does need to be accessed by the outside world.
Which ports do web servers allow inbound traffic on? Pg 958
Port 80 and 443
Why is it a bad idea to put a web server on the internal network versus the DMZ? Pg 958
Because the firewall must then let all port 80 traffic come in to the internal network, which gives more ways for hackers to get in.
What are the advantages to using a file server? Pg 958
Ease of access to files for collaboration, centralized security management, and centralized backups
What are the important functions of a print server? Pg 959
Making printers available on the network, accepting print requests, managing print requests (in the print queue), and (in some cases) processing and storing print jobs.
T/F File and print servers are commonly combined. Pg 959
True.
What is a DHCP server? Pg 960
A Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol server provides IP configuration information to clients.
What is a scope and what information is in the scope? Pg 961
The scope is the information the DHCP provides to clients. This includes an address pool, lease durations, address reservations, and scope options(extra configuration that commonly includes address of the default gateway and DNS servers)
What are the four parts of the DHCP request process? Pg 963
(1) DHCP DISCOVER = Can anyone give me an IP?
(2) DHCP OFFER = Yes. Do you want xxx.xxx.x.xx?
(3) DHCP REQUEST = Yes, if it is available.
(4) DHCP ACK = It’s all yours, here’s the address and scope options.
T/F DHCP servers should be located in the DMZ. Pg 964
False. DHCP servers should be located on the internal network. Devices connecting via remote access should get their IPs from the Remote Access Service which can be located in the DMZ.
