CH 23 BB Flashcards
What are the four general areas of safety concerns in regards to computers? Pg 1151
Computer Components, electrostatic discharge, electromagnetic interference, natural elements
When attempting to switch computer components other than hot-swappable units, what should you always do? Pg 1151
Power off the machine, though leave it plugged in as the plug grounds the machine and can reduce the chance of electrostatic discharge.
What are the two biggest dangers when working with power supplies and why is it a bad idea to open a power supply’s casing? Pg 1152
Electrocuting and burning yourself. There are several capacitors that can hold a lethal amount of electricity in them long after the power supply is turned off.
What is another device that you should avoid fixing yourself? Pg 1153
The computer monitor, take it to a certified monitor or TV repair shop.
In the case you do have to repair a monitor, what are the proper safety procedures? Pg 1153
Discharge the high-voltage charge on it by using a high-voltage probe. Also be careful around an LCD monitor’s inverter as it stores a significant amount of energy.
When repairing a printer, what are some things you should avoid doing? Pg 1154
- Turning a toner cartridge upside down
- putting objects in the feeding system of a printer to unclog it while it is running
- looking into the laser of a laser printer
- blowing into ink cartridges
- touching the EP cartridge in a laser printer with your fingers(your fingers have dead skin and oil on them)
- avoid electrocuting or burning yourself on printers(laser printers are especially harzardous)
What components are within a normal IT person’s skill level to replace and when should you call a certified printer repair-person? Pg 1154
ITs can fix messed-up settings, paper jams, and ink or toner problems, Otherwise call a printer repair-person.
What is important to remember about ESD (static electricity)? Pg 1155
You have to transfer atleast 3000 volts in order to shock other people/yourself, but it requires less than 300 volts to harm a computer component.
What are the measures you can take to reduce the risk of ESD? Pg 1156-59
Antistatic wrist straps, antistatic mats, tying hair/ties back, antistatic bags for parts, self-grounding(in case you are without any antistatic equipment), antistatic spray (on clothing and carpets), and maintain the relative humidity at 50%.
What common packing material can easily hold a static charge and should be avoided? Pg 1159
Styrofoam
What is EMI, what does it affect, and what are common causes? Pg 1159-60
Electromagnetic interference can cause your equipment or network to malfunction and can be caused by electromagnetic radiation of various sources such as network devices, magnets, cordless phones, and microwave ovens.
What natural elements should be kept out of your computer environment? Pg 1160
Water, dirt, dust, direct sunlight, and heat.
When attempting to safely move equipment, what things should you check for/do? Pg 1161
Equipment:
-The equipment is unplugged
-secure the power chord(by tying it to the device or removing it).
Your Person:
-remove any loose jewelry and secure long hair or neckties
Technique;
-LIFT WITH YOUR LEGS
-do not twist when lifting
-maintain natural curves of the back and spine when lifting
-Keep objects close to your body and at waist level
-push rather than pull if possible
T/F If something is too heavy, you should just suck it up and pick it up anyways. Pg 1162
False. Either ask a coworker or get a dolly.
What tools are appropriate for working on computers? Pg 1163
Different size screwdrivers, tweezers, and antistatic wrist straps.
