Q

What is the method of spraying ink out of the cartridge that HP popularized? Pg 506

A

an electrical signal is sent to the heating element, which heats up quickly and causes the ink to vaporize. the vaporized ink expands and is pushed out the pinhole to form a bubble, this bubble forms a droplet that drops on the page. When the droplet breaks off the surface tension of the ink pulls the rest of the ink back into the cartridge.

Q

What is the method of spraying ink developed by Epson? Pg 506

A

uses a piezoelectric element that flexes when energized, this outward flex pushes the ink from the nozzle; on the return, it sucks more ink from the reservoir

Q

What is the maintenance station and why is it important? Pg 506

A

sucks out excess ink from the ink nozzles using vacuum suction and provides an area for the ink nozzles to rest while not in use. Like the name suggests, it keep the ink jets in working order

Q

What is the purpose of the head carriage? Pg 506

A

Moves back and forth during printing and carries the physical and electronic connections for the print head and (in some cases) ink reservoir.

Q

What is the purpose of the stepper motor and how precise is it? Pg 507

A

Responsible for moving the head carriage, moves in the same very small increments so it is very accurate in its movements.

Q

What is the carriage belt controlled by and what component does it move? Pg 508

A

belt is driven by the carriage motor and moves the print head back and forth across the page while it prints.

16
Q

What is the function of the stabilizer bar? Pg 508

A

keeps the print head carriage aligned and stable while it traverses the page.

17
Q

Describe how the paper-feed mechanism feeds paper into the printer. Pg 508

A

The pickup rollers rub against the paper as they rotate and feed paper into the printer, these work against small cork or rubber patches known as separator pads which keep the rest of the paper in place so that only one sheet goes into the printer.
