Ch14-18: Evolution Flashcards
Smallest Unit where evolution may take place
Population
A “random” change or mistake within a gene
Mutation
As species acclimate to their environment and are likely to be chosen via. Natural Selection
Adaptation
“Raw material” for change
Variation
A collection of all of the alleles in a population
Gene Pool
Hardy-Weinberg Equation
p^2+2pq+q^2=1
P=Frequency of dominant Allele
Q=Frequency of recessive allele
Populations that pass through environmental events in which a limited number survive
Population Bottleneck
The change of frequency of alleles within a population
Evolution
Refers to the difference between individuals in a given generation and how many offspring they are able to leave. The “fittest” leave more offspring while those not suited to the environment leave fewer or even none.
