Ch.13 Flashcards
Infection
the invasion of a susceptible host(a patient)
Colonization
the presence and growth of microorganisms within a host but without tissue invasion or damage.
Disease or infection
results when pathogens grow or multiply and alter normal tissue function.
Communicable disease
an infectious disease transmitted directly from one person to another is considered contagious.
Symptomatic
If the pathogens multiply and cause clinical signs and symptoms.
Asymptomatic
if clinical signs and symptoms are not presented.
Virulence
microorganisms present; their ability to produce disease; their ability to enter and survive in the host; and the susceptibility of the host.
Reservoir
a place where microorganisms survive, multiply, and wait to transfer to a susceptible host. (humans and animals)
HAIs
Health care- associated infections
Antigen
foreign material
HAI Health-care acquired infection
When a patient develops an infection that was not present or incubating at the time of admission to a health care setting.
Community-aquired infection
is one that was present at the time of admission to a health care setting.
HAI’s may be exogenous
comes from microorganisms found outside the individual, such as salmonella, clostridium tetani, and Aspergillus.
HAI’s may be endogenous
occurs when part of the patients flora becomes altered and an overgrowth results (staphylococci, enterococci, yeasts, and streptococci) *Often happens when a patient receives broad-spectrum antibiotics that alter norma flora.
asepsis
means the absence of disease-producing microorganisms.
