Ch.10 Language Flashcards
Representativeness heuristic
Stimuli similar to a prototype are beloved to be more likely than dissimilar stimuli
Crystallized intelligence
Ability to think logically using specific knowledge
Cognition
Internal mental processes including information processing, thinking, reasoning and problem solving
Availability heuristic
Frequency of an events occurrence is predicted by the ease with which it is thought of
Heuristic
Shortcut to problem solving, also know as a rule of thumb
Recognition heuristic
Higher value is place do. The more easily recognized alternative
Affect heuristic
Choice between alternatives based on emotional or gut reactions to stimuli
Concept
Organizing principle derived from experience
Prototype
Representation of a category formed by averaging all members of the category
Problem
Situation where a current state is separated from an ideal state by obstacles
Exemplar
Specific member of a category used to represent the category
Functional fixedness
Possible barrier to successful problem solving cuz the concept is considered only in its most typical form
Problem solving
Use of information to meet a specific goal
Algorithm
Precise step by step set of rules that will reliably generate a solution to a problem
Language
System for communicating thoughts and feelings using arbitrary signals
