Ch. 9 cognition and perception Flashcards
field dependence
difficulty in separating objects from each other
see integrated whole
see the object and background are integrated as a whole. makes it more difficult to separate objects from each other
how do holistic thinkers perceive an image?
as an integrated whole, and have field dependence
how do analytic thinker perceive an image?
they have field independence, they are able to separate objects from each other
`internal/dispositional attribution
explaining peoples behaviour by attending to their personal characteristics, like personality
external/situational attribution
explaining peoples behaviour by attending to contextual variables, like a situational factor
holistic judgement
focus on overall resemblance, round petals, one leaf and one circle
analytic judgement
rule based judgement, focus on the stem rule– ex. all have curved stem or all have straight stem
holistic thinkers
find general resemblances and relationships between multiple aspects, ex. flower example
tolerance for contradiction
truth can be found in each of two compelling propositions
dialectical thinking
tendency to accept what seems to be contradictions in though or belief
positive logical determination
contradictions are mutually exclusive categories- something can’t be true and false at the same time
naive dialecticism
belief that truth is always somewhere in the middle, reletive acceptance for contradictions, everything is connected ex. the yin yang
dialectical response
addressed the issue from both sides, attempted to reconcile the contradictions
non-dialectal response
found an exclusive fault with one side or the other
