Ch. 8 - Lewis Diagrams and VSEPR Geometries Flashcards
What is the octet rule?
Stable compounds and elements tend to exchange electrons so that they have a full 8 electrons in their valence shell.
What are the three types of bonding?
Ionic, covalent, and metallic.
What is a covalent bond?
When valence electrons are shared between two or more atoms.
What is bond order?
The number of electrons involved in holding a pair of atoms together.
What is the bond order of a single bond?
1
What is the bond order of a double bond?
2
What is the bond order of a triple bond?
3
What is the bond order of benzene?
1.5
How do you calculate formal charges?
Assign one electron from each bond to each element involved in that bond. Add non-bonding electrons to their associated elements and then compare to that element’s valence electrons.
What are resonance structures?
Molecules that can have different valid Lewis diagrams by moving electrons (but not atoms) to different positions.
What is a steric number?
The number of atoms and lone pairs bonded to an element in a molecule.
What is the electron group geometry of a molecule with a steric number of 2?
Linear (180°)
What is the electron group geometry of a molecule with a steric number of 3?
Trigonal planar (120°)
What is the electron group geometry of a molecule with a steric number of 4?
Tetrahedral (109.47°)
What is the electron group geometry of a molecule with a steric number of 5?
Trigonal bipyramidal (90°, 120°, 180°)
