Ch. 10 - Nonmetals Part 1 (Hydrogen and Acids) Flashcards
What are the isotopes of hydrogen and which is radioactive?
hydrogen-1 (protium; P), hydrogen-2 (deuterium; D), hydrogen-3 (tritium; T). Tritium is radioactive.
What are some uses for tritium?
Radioactive tracer in medicine and fuel for hydrogen bombs.
In which compounds can hydrogen act as a cation and an anion?
Metallic hydrides. (Hydrogen + a transition metal)
What are Arrhenius acids and bases?
An Arrhenius acid dissociates in water to form hydrogen cations. An Arrhenius base dissociates in water to produce hydroxide anions.
What are Brønsted acids and bases?
A Brønsted acid is a proton donor. A Brønsted base is a proton acceptor.
What are Lewis acids and bases?
A Lewis acid is an electron pair acceptor. A Lewis bases is an electron pair donor.
