Ch. 7 - More Metals and Ionic Solids Flashcards
How is boron different from the other group 13 elements?
It’s a metalloid and is much harder than the other elements, thus it has higher melting and boiling points.
How many valence electrons do group 13 elements have?
3
What ions do group 13 elements form?
+3 cations
How are Indium and thallium different from the other group 13 elements?
They can also form +1 cations (thallium prefers to be +1)
Do group 13 elements react with oxygen?
Yes.
Do group 13 elements react with water?
Not at room temperature. The thin oxide layer (passivation layer) on the metal’s surface protects the elements.
Do group 13 elements react with acids?
Sometimes. They don’t react with oxidizing acids, but they do react with strong non-oxidizing acids to make hydrogen gas.
Do group 13 elements react with bases?
Yes. They produce complex ions and hydrogen gas.
