Ch. 12 - Coordination Chemistry and Colour Flashcards
What is the only transition metal that isn’t a solid?
Mercury
Do transition metals form cations or anions?
Cations
What is a ligand?
Any substance which can act as a Lewis base (neutral or anion), donating electrons to the transition metal cation.
What is a monodentate ligand?
A ligand co-ordinated to a transition metal through one atom.
What is a bidentate ligand?
A ligand co-ordinated to a transition metal through two atoms.
What is the co-ordination number?
Thenumber of atoms attached to the transition metal.
When is high spin distribution favoured?
When a transition metal is bonded to weak field ligands.
When is low spin distribution favoured?
When a transition metal is bonded to strong field ligands.
