Q

What are the 3 learning styles and what are strategies to use with each?

A
  1. Verbal learners: be descriptive and concise, use immediately before movement becomes imminent. Counting down will help them know how many reps before change ensues.
  2. Visual learners: use body language and gestures (touch triceps or point in direction that matches cued words). Count w/fingers as well as words. Use mirroring.
  3. Kinesthetic learners: use words such as “sense, imagine, pretend, feel.” Ask permission and use subtle touch, i.e. placing open hand and ask participant to move body towards it

Q

What are the (10) types of cues?

A
  1. Breathing (to match exercise)
  2. Rhythm (cue pace)
  3. Anatomical (enhance kinesthetic awareness)
  4. Numerical (how many reps left)
  5. Directional (where a movement takes place)
  6. Safety (emphasize proper form)
  7. Motivational (positive reinforcement)
  8. Alignment (exercise set up, posture, body awareness during movement)
  9. Spatial (body’s orientation to equipment or room)
  10. Humorous (create entertaining but educational experience)

Q

The _____ style of teaching makes all decisions about posture, rhythm, and duration, seeking imitation by participants.

A

Command. Without proper planning, this might not be an inclusive class. This is well-suited for warming up, cooling down, or introducing new exercises.

Q

The _____ style of teaching provides opportunities for individualization and one-on-one instructor feedback for participants while still effectively leading a group exercise class.

A

Practice. GFI encourages everyone to chose own intensity to guarantee individual success. (i.e. 1-min round of pushups in HIIT class). Allows instructors to move around and interact.

Q

The _____ style of teaching relies on participants to provide their own feedback.

A

Self-check. They perform a task nd view/record results, i.e. with heart rate, talk test, or RPE

Q

The ______ domain of learning describes the brain’s ability to gather and retain info and knowledge.

A

Cognitive. Training this domain positively affects motivation and exercise compliance, so GFIs should incorporate some elements of education into their classes.

Q

The _____ domain of learning describes emotional behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes.

A

Affective. Overall feelings regarding health and motivational attitudes in general will shape a person’s feelings about exercise.

Q

Within the _____ state of learning, movements are new to the participant, who acts as a novice.

A

Q

After the cognitive state of learning is the _____ state, which includes improvements in the basic fundamentals of the skills.

A

Associative. In this stage, most participants are able to move back and forth with music and concentrate on occasional cues from the instructor to improve performance.

Q

During the _____ state of learning, the skills becomes automatic or habitual.

A

Autonomous. Learners can perform without following an instructor, and can detect their own errors

Q

When using the ______ teaching strategy, instructors reduce the number of repetitions that make up a movement sequence.

A

Repetition-reduction. For example, if participants will do 4 grapevines and 8 hamstring curls, GFIs can have them first do 2 grapevines and 4 hamstring curls

Q

When using the _____ or _____ teaching strategy, instructors reduce all complexity options to the lowest common denominator and engage the class in movement.

A

Simple-to-complex or layering. i.e. Performing a grapevine with 2 step-touches. Repeat for proficiency and then offer 2 other options (including leaping to side twice instead of grapevine or 360 pivot with hamstring curls in place of step-touches). Generally, layering involves changes in direction, rhythm and lever length.
