Ch 6: Creating Memorable Movement Experiences Flashcards
Lower levels of physical activity are seen with _____ age, _____ years of education, and _____ income.
Increasing, fewer, low
One of the most important and influential personal attribute variables is activity history. In supervised exercise programs, _____ is the most reliable predictor of current participation.
Past program participation.
_______ has been linked to exercise adherence, as individuals who perceive their health to be poor are unlikely to start or adhere to an exercise program.
Health perception
Access to facilities, time, and social support are examples of ______ factors influencing participation in and adherence to an exercise program.
Environmental. Being close to the gym, having the perception that you have time for the gym, and having supportive people (especially a spouse) are important predictors of adherence.
What are (2) physical activity factors influencing participation and adherence?
Intensity (vigorous exercise programs are 2x as likely to cause dropouts as moderate intensity programs), and Injury (if caused by program participation, likely to cause dropout)
A good working relationship between participant and GFI can enhance adherence. What are some ways to enhance your relationships?
Establish rapport, learn names and use them during class to provide feedback
What are the (5) stages of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavioral Change, and what are strategies to use in each?
- Precontemplation: discuss risk and benefits, validate that making a change is their decision
- Contemplation: discuss different activity options, offer invitations (trial period or free class)
- Preparation: provide support and feedback, identify social support and establish goals, encourage small steps toward self-efficacy
- Action: increase awareness of inevitable lapses, reiterate long-term benefits of adherence
- Maintenance: encourage program variety, reinforce transition from external to internal rewards
_____ is the belief in one’s own capabilities to successfully execute necessary courses of action, such as engaging in an exercise program.
Self efficacy. this is both a determinant of behavior and an outcome of behavioral change.
_____ refers to the numbers of pros and cons and individual perceives regarding adopting or maintaining an activity program.
Decisional balance. GFIs can acknowledge minor discomforts (increased breathing, HR, sweating) and reassure participants this is normal
What is the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation?
Extrinsic comes from outside (i.e. fitness challenges, free water bottles/classes, praise). Intrinsic comes from yourself. GFIs should strive to maximize enjoyment and engagement among participants to increase intrinsic motivation.
What are (2) strategies for enhancing participants’ success?
Goal setting (SMART goals) and preparing for setbacks (i.e. discussing how they’ll stick to the plan when they’re on vacation)
It can be helpful to the group fitness experience to establish a _____ for the day’s class; this emphasizes a specific aspect of the experience that the GFI wants to be a focal point for participants.
Central theme (i.e. kinesthetic awareness, philosophical concept like mind-body, or part of the body). To be most impactful, GFIs should identify 3 ways to emphasize theme. Clearly state it at start of class and reiterate at end.
Which portion of a group exercise class is the most memorable?
The first 5 minutes and last 5 minutes. It can be helpful to utilize formal, well-rehearsed opening and closing statements to set tone for class and discuss purpose. May include greeting/intro, gratitude for attending, acknowledge new/familiar faces, advise class purpose, reference equipment or exercises that can be used, how to monitor their intensity.
Research shows that individuals who have strong beliefs about the _________ of their class attend more fitness classes, are less likely to drop out, are more likely to enjoy physical activity and have high self-efficacy toward physical activity.
Cohesiveness. This can develop from teamwork among group fitness staff (taking one another’s classes or suggesting that participants take another instructors’ classes). Or using technology to keep participants connected.
