Ch. 8 Flashcards
Alternating light and dark bands, are visible under a microscope
Striated
Can be made to Contract and relax by conscious control
Voluntary
Contractions that are not under conscious control
Involuntary
Skeletal muscle cells that have elongated shapes. Composes skeletal muscle
Muscle fibers
A fibrous membrane covering, supporting, and separating muscles
Fascia
A white fibrous cord of dense regular connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
Tendon
The cell membrane of a muscle fiber (cell), especially of a skeletal muscle fiber
Sarcolemma
The oxygen-binding, iron-containing protein present in the sarcoplasm of muscle fibers (cells). Contributes the red color to muscle
Myoglobin
A contractile unit in a striated muscle fiber extending from one Z disc to the next Z disk
Sarcomere
A wasting away of muscles
Muscular atrophy
An increase in the diameter of muscle fibers owing to the production of more myofibrils, mitochondria, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and so forth
Muscular hypertrophy
Neurons that conduct impulses from the brain toward the spinal cord or out of the brain and spinal cord into cranial or spinal nerves to effectors that may be either muscles or glands
Motor neuron
The repeating sequence of events that causes the filaments to slide
contraction cycle
Relaxed, flabby, or soft; lacking muscle tone
Flaccid
Inability of a muscle to maintain its strength of contraction or tension; may be related to insufficient oxygen, depletion of glycogen, and/or lactic acid buildup
Muscle fatigue
