Ch. 6 The Skeletal System Flashcards
The shaft of a long bone
Diaphysis
The end of a long bone, usually larger in diameter than the shaft
Epiphysis
Region of a long bone between the diaphysis and epiphysis that contains the epiphyseal plate in a growing bone
Metaphysis
Hyaline cartilage attached to articulate bone surfaces
Articular cartilage
The membrane that covers bone and consists of connective tissue, osteogenic cells, and osteoblasts; is essential for bone growth, repair, and nutrition
Periosteum
The space within the diaphysis of a bone that contains yellow bone marrow. Also called marrow cavity
Medullary cavity
The membrane that lines the medullary cavity of bones, consisting of osteogenic cells and scattered osteoclasts
Endosteum
Bone tissue
Osseous tissue
Deposition of mineral salts, primarily hydroxyapatite, in a framework formed by collagen fibers in which the tissue hardens
Calcification
The basic unit of structure in adult compact bone, consisting of a central canal with its concentrically arranged lamellae, lacunae, osteocytes, and canaliculi
Osteon
Rings of hard, calcified matrix
Concentric lamellae
Bone tissue that consists of an irregular latticework of thin plates of bone called trabeculae; spaces between trabeculae of some bones are filled with red bone morrow; found inside short, flat, and irregular bones and in the epiphyses of long bones
Spongy bone tissue
Irregular latticework of thin plates of spongy bone. Fibrous cord of connective tissue serving as supporting fiber by forming a septum extending into an organ from its wall or capsule
Trabeculae
Formation of bone. Also called osteogenesis
Ossification
The ongoing replacement of old bone tissue by new bone tissue
Bone remodeling
