High Context Culture
one in which considerable weight is given to the context of unspoken messages
Expressed Struggle
conflict becomes a concern to a group when the disagreement is expressed verbally or, more often, nonverbally. Early signs of conflict include furrowed brows, grimacing facial expressions, and flashes of frustration evident in the voice. If the conflict persists, words are usually exchanged and unmanaged tempers may flare.
Between at least two interdependent people
A conflict between even just two people in a group of five will undoubtedly have an impact on the dynamics of the entire group.
Negative impacts of conflict
- keeps the group from completing its task,
- interferes with the quality of the group’s decision or productivity
- threatens the existence of the group
Low-Context Culture
more emphasis is placed on words and their explicit meaning than on implicit, nonverbal cues.
Ex: United States
people in Low-Context Culture situation
give greater importance to task or instrumental issues
people in a High-Context Culture situation
give expressive or emotional aspects of managing conflict
Incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference

1) Avoidance- ignore disagreements)
2) accommodation (win/lose)-gives in
disadvantage : bad decisions
advantage: you are reasonable
3) competition (win/lose)- disadvantage: more defensive, blame
4) compromise (win-win) - middle ground
5) collaboration (win-win)- high concern for self and others. not win/lose instead solve problems
