Ch 2 Flashcards
Explanatory Function
allows ppl to understand why groups are effective while others are not
Method Theories
takes prescriptive approach to small group communication
Systems Theory
flexible enough to encompass vast array of variables that influence group and team interaction
System
composed of many dif individual parts that make up a whole unit
Interdependence
idea that change in one group member can alter all of others. (add or lose a group member and it effects the project)
Equifinality
systems final state may be reached by multiple parts and from different initial states; there is more than one way to reach a goal
Symbolic Convergence Theory
explains how certain types of communication shape a group’s identity and culture, which in turn influence other dynamics such as norms, rules, and decision making
Structuration Theory
provides general framework that explains how ppl structure their groups by making active use of rules and resources
Functional Theory
refers to how well a group functions
What are the ways a group function?
- find an issue
- communicate to make ideas to overcome problem
- review to insure process and problems solution are good
Leadership
behavior that exerts influence on the group
Rules
sets of expectations ppl hold for themselves and for others in a given context
Cohesiveness
degree of attraction group members feel toward one another and toward the group
Situation
context in which the group communication occurs
Process Theories
theories presented that explain group and team phenomena
Fantasy
creative and imaginative shared interpretation of events that fulfills a groups need to make sense of its experience and to anticipate its future
Norms
standards that establish which behaviors are normally permitted or encouraged within the group and which are forbidden or discouraged
Self Concept
theory about yourself. how you view or think of yourself
Predictive Function
theory allows you to predict group members behaviors based on experience. you can predict what behaviors that can be assets to your group
Synergy
when the group values the “whole” group goal over their individual goals
Entropy
measure of randomness in a system
Goals
designated task of a group
