Chronic Bronchitis
Prolonged inflammation of the mucous membranes in the bronchial tubes
Common Cold
acute (short term) inflammation of the respiratory mucous membranes pharyngitis
Croup
childhood disease with a barking cough and high pitched breathing
Asthma
sudden periodic attacks of dyspnea (painful breathing) accompanied by wheezing caused by a spasm of the bronchial tubes or swelling of the mucous membrane of the bronchi
Influenza
acute contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract with sudden fever chills headache muscle aches cough and sore throat
Pneumonia
inflammation of the lungs
Cystic Fibrosis
an inherited disease of the respiratory system pancreas and sweat glands chronic respiratory infection pancreatic insufficiency and heat intolerance
Pulmonary Embolism
a traveling blood clot that gets lodged in the lung
Tuberculosis
contagious disease be caused by bacteria in the lungs with inflammation by scaring and necrosis
inspiration
breathing in the diaphragm contracts and moves downward elongating the thoracic in the cavity
expiration
breathing out the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward shortening the thoracic cavity and increasing the pressure in the cavity
respiration
process of gas exchange in the alveolar sacs
internal
gas exchange at the cellular and tissue levels
external
oxygen and carbon dioxide exchanged from the environment of the cells
ventilation
air moves in or out of the lungs
cheyne stokes respiration
breathing characterized by periods of apnea (10-60 seconds) followed by gradually increasing respirations
hyperventilation
breathing is faster and deeper then normal
orthopnea
breathing becomes easier when sitting up straight
aspiration
drawing in a foreign body food or fluid through the nose throat and lungs during inspiration
sputum
mucous coughed up from the respiratory tract
sleep apnea
periodic cessation of breathing during sleep
pleural effusion
escape of fluid into the pleural cavity due to excessive fluid buildup in the pleural space
chronic obstructive pulmonary
reduced ability of lungs to ventile
