a group of people (parents, children, etc.) who are considered to be related in some way
- example: by “blood” or marriage
family of orientation
family in which one is born and grows up

includes groups of relatives other than, or in addition to, a married couple and their children

includes people who share common ancestry; descend from same ancestors
patrilineal decent
people automatically have lifetime membership in their father’s group; children of the group’s men join the group, but children of the group’s women are excluded
matrilineal decent
people belong to the mother’s group automatically at birth & stay members throughout life; these groups include only children of group’s women
unilineal decent
using only one line of descent, either male or female line
lineage
descent group based on demonstrated decent
clan
decent group based on stipulated descent
patrilocality
married couples reside in husband’s father’s community, so that children will grow up in their father’s village
matrilocality
married couples live in wife’s mother’s community, & their children grow up in their mother’s village
exogamy
the custom & practice of seeking a mate outside one’s own group
