Ch 6 - The Earth In Space Flashcards
Revolution
When the Earth moves in an orbit around the Sun. It takes 365 1/4 days.
Full Moon
When the Moon is circular and the sun rays deliver light to the whole face of the moon.
Phases
Observed shapes that change in a repeated cycle.
Waxing
The transition change from the New moon to Full moon.
Rotation
The turning of the Earth about its own axis. It takes 24 hours to do a full 360 degree rotation.
Waning
The transition change from the Full Moon to the New Moon.
Tides
The regular rise and fall of the ocean levels in a cycle about 12 1/2 hours.
Spring Tides
A very high tide that occurs when there is a New or Full Moon. The Earth experiences a gravitational pull because the Moon, Earth and Sun are all aligned.
Neap Tides
A weaker high and low idea that occurs when the Sun and Moon are not aligned with the Earth. The Sun and Moon have a gravitational pull against each other.
Lunar Eclipse
Occurs when the Earth completely blocks off the light from the sun, causing the Moon to be in complete darkness.
Solar Eclipse
Occurs when the Moon moves in between the Sun and the Earth, blocking some or all of the Suns heat to reach a place on Earth.
Total Solar Eclipse
Occurs when the Moon moves in between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking all heat and light from getting to a certain place on Earth.
Partial Solar Eclipses
Occurs when the Moon is moved in between the Sun and the Earth, the Moon only blocks a small amount of the light from reaching a place on Earth.
Annular Solar Eclipses
Occurs when the Moon moves in between the Sun and the Earth, the Moon blocks out only the central light, making a ring of the sun visible on Earth.
Orbit
When a planet moves in a circular path around the Sun.
