Ch 5 - Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Dissolved
When a substance vanishes from sight into tiny little particles.
Solution
A mixture of solute dissolving into a solvent.
Solute
The substance that is dissolved into the solvent
Solvent
The substance that does the dissolving.
Aqueous Solutions
A solution when water is the solvent.
Soluble
The substance is able to dissolve.
Insoluble
A substance that cannot be dissolved in liquid.
Chemical Reaction
A chemical change is when one or more new chemicals are produced.
Concentrated
A solution with a large amount of solute.
Saturate
Unable to dissolve any more solute.
Dilution
The process to add more solvent to make it less concentrated.
Pressure
Push or squeeze on an object
Sediment
Solid that goes to the bottom of the liquid.
Suspension
When the solid is suspended in mid air.
Filtration
When you pour a liquid through tiny holes that water can go through, but the solids remain at the top.
Filtrate
The filtered product of a suspension, the liquid is the filtrate in this case.
Residue
The solid left above the filter paper after the liquid is filtered.
Decanting
After centrifuging, when you pour out the liquid.
Sieving
Separating particles of different sizes by letting the smaller ones fall through holes in a container
Separating Funnel
A pear shaped glass container with a tap, used to separate the liquids from solids.
Centrifuge
Separating mixtures by rotating the cylinder very fast and the heavier parts move to the outside.
Colloid
A mixture that has very tiny particles that is able to spread evenly into another substance.
Emulsion
A colloid with droplets that spread evenly through another.
