Ch 6 - Structure & Function Of Living CellS Flashcards
What are the three principles of cell theory?
- All organism are composed of cells
- All cells arise from preexisting cells
- The cell is the basic living unit of organization
What are the three structures in all cells?
- Plasma membrane
- DNA
- Cytoplasm
What is the plasma membrane?
The boundary of the living material
What is DNA?
Deoxyribonucleic acid; store genetic material
What is cytoplasm?
Everything inside the plasma membrane that isn’t part of the DNA region
What are the two basic types of cells?
- Prokaryotic
2. Eukaryotic
What are prokaryotic cells?
They do not have a nucleus
Ex bacteria and archaea
What are eukaryotic cells?
They do have a nucleus
Ex fungi, plants, animals
What is cytoplasmic streaming?
Intracellular motion caused by microfilaments
When cytoplasm appears solid it is in ________ state.
Gel
When cytoplasm appears to be in motion within a fluid it is in a ________ state.
Sol
What are organelles?
Structures in the cytoplasm that have been separated by enclosure in membranes.
Ex nucleus, mitochondria
What are the three parts of the nucleus?
- Nuclear envelope
- Nucleolus
- DNA in nucleoplasm
What are three structures that plant cells have that animal cells do not?
- Cell wall
- Chloroplasts
- Central Vacuole
