Q

What is a lipid?

A

Oily or greasy compounds that doesn’t dissolve in water, but will dissolve in organic solvents like ether or chloroform.

16
Q

What are lipids composed of?

A

Hydrocarbon chains with an acid group at one end

17
Q

What are triglycerides?

A

Lipids with three fatty acids attached to a glycerol molecule

18
Q

Are fat solid or liquid at room temperature?

A

Solid

19
Q

Are oils solid or liquid at room temperature?

A

Liquid

20
Q

What two tests are available to check for lipids?

A

Uncoated paper towel test and Sudan IV test

21
Q

What are you looking for in the uncoated paper test?

A

A grease stain

22
Q

What are you looking for in the Sudan IV test?

A

If the reddish liquid (Sudan IV) has dissolved in the lipid

23
Q

What is a protein?

A

Complex chains on amino acids that do a wide range of functions in an organism.

Ex are structural components of muscle, bone, hair and nails. Movement of structures within cells (cell division). Some are enzymes that speed up cellular reactions.

24
Q

How are proteins developed?

A

Two or more amino acids are linked together by peptide bonds forming a polypeptide chain, then the chain folds and twists as links form between adjacent parts of the chain.

25
Q

What are amino acids?

A

Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen

26
Q

What is Biuret Reagent testing for?

A

The presence of peptide bonds indicating the presence of protein

27
Q

What color will the solution change to with a greater concentration of peptide bonds (biuret test)?

A

Bluish color
