active listening
techniques that use all the sense to interpret verbal and nonverbal messages.
- attention is paid both to what the speaker is saying and to what the speaker is not saying & the mind of the listener focuses on interaction and detects feelings in addition to the spoken words
aphasia
inability to speak or understand language
body language
nonverbal communication that reveals the attitude or mood through physical gestures, posture, or proximity
communication process
the exchange of information, feelings, needs, and preferences b/w 2 people
congruent
two things that are in agreement
- verbal and nonverbal languages effectively meet the goal of shared meaning in communication
connotative meaning
emotional associations that can be attached to a word
- connotative language, whether use consciously or unconsciously, has the potential to shape a listener’s attitude
denotative meaning
the literal meaning of something absent any interpretation
feedback
a return message sent by the receiver of information that completes the communication process
- indicates that the original message has been received, processed, and comprehended
incivility
interacting with a lack of courtesy and respect towards others
nonverbal communication
communication that is conveyed by body language
- less conscious and more indirect than verbal communication and therefore often conveys more of what a person feels, thinks, and means than what is stated in words
proxemics
distance, or personal space, that people place between themselves and others
shared meaning
a goal of communication in which mutual understanding of the meaning of a message between 2 people is est.
therapeutic communication
patient-centered communication in which the goal is to promote a greater understanding of patient’s needs, concerns, and feelings
verbal communication
a conscious use of words, either spoken or written
- more direct than nonverbal comm. & often used to give or receive specific information
