ch. 6 Flashcards
innate reflex, look and listen to everything, how they learn
curiosity
develops around 4 months old, can recognize a face with only one interaction
face recognition
evident around 3 months, stabilizes around 9 months, memory for movement, emotions or thoughts not using words, no words to describe these things no words for feelings
implicit memory
long-term memory that’s concerned with recollection of facts and events
explicit memory
inability to remember anything before the age 2-3 years old, myelination and neural development in limbic system, non-verbal memory - not encoded with words - hard to describe
infantile amnesia
6 stages of sensorimotor stage
newborn reflexes, primary circular reactions, secondary circular reflexes, coordination of secondary reactions, tertiary circular reactions, mental representations
exploration through using reflexes - involuntary actions
newborn reflexes, birth to 1 month
more interaction, adaptive reflexive reaction, repeat pleasurable actions
primary circular reactions (1-4months)
repeating events which a child finds interesting, trying to shake or swing things
secondary circular reflexes (4-8m)
intentional or goal-oriented behavior, means-end action sequence, object permanence, struggles with A not B
coordination of secondary reactions (8-12m)
does action with goal of discovering what happens when they do an action, solves a not b search error
tertiary circular reactions (12-18m)
think before doing, using mental representations - moves to pre operational thought, symbolic thought
mental representations (18 m - 2y)
expresses a whole thought in just one word
holophrase
apply a word to what they have a mental representation for
under extension
overapply a concept to something that it doesn’t apply to, knows a ball is round and then sees an apple and sees that it is round so it is a ball
overextension
social beings –> need communication, requires engaging social interaction
social impules
error in thinking children can learn through screens, research shows children learn better and more effectively with interaction
video deficit error
american academy of pediatrics - no screen time under the age of 24 months
screen time
screen timess
55 minutes a day at 6 months, 90 minutes a day at age 2
FOXP2 gene, brain maturation, and natural instinct to imitate others
biologically innate
