Why is it important for interpreters to understand the dynamics of oppression?
That way an interpreter knows how to deal with a situation. Interpreters do hold power, but they need to know how to use it in the right way that causes no harm. Failing to do so can cause suffering on both ends.
Do interpreters witness discrimination, disrespect and more?
Yes. This situation can happen during an interpreting assignment or even outside of professional work. Interpreters need to develop skills to deal with those emotions that can occur.
When it comes to humorous jokes that relate to hearing individuals, what must an interpreter remember?
The comments about ignorant hearing people doesn’t include interpreters. Those comments are towards individuals who are hearing that left a negative impact towards their lives.
Why must an interpreter develop strategies and skills in a power inherent position?
Interpreters need to develop those skills that way they know how to handle a situation and push aside their thoughts, emotions and other mixed feelings that can occur. Coming to grip with your own history with oppression and power.
Humor as a sense of tool for interpreters:
A sense of humor can help an interpreter understand the joke from a deaf individual. It can also help the interpreter by not feeling offense but rather understand the joke from an upside down world in which deaf people have a chance to gain something.
Why is neutrality with interpreters and consumers a myth?
It is a myth because consumers and interpreters will have their feelings arise. A consumer is freely to talk about their experience, emotions and more. As for the interpreter they will have mix feelings come up but it is how their skills can prevent that from showing in their interpreting work.
What is an advocate?
An advocate is one who speaks out on issues on behalf of others.
What is an ally?
An ally is one who supports Deaf individuals in their own struggles for liberation. They learn about oppression, and recognize that they can be a part of the problem, help other hearing individuals understand oppression, and more.
How can being an advocate harm the deaf community?
Being an advocate can lead a hearing individual to become the leader on the issue and push aside capable deaf individuals. It can become oppression
