Ch. 5 Flashcards
Interpreter’s need schema, why?
Schema is a mental ‘script.’ These scripts are developed from learning experiences which help us predict on how to act and how others act in different settings. Different from one culture to another.
What is schematic construct?
It is the way people organize their scripts, in which also includes, characteristics, social roles/interactions, etc.
What is the difference between stereotyping and oppression?
Stereotyping is where a person is pre-judging an individual and making assumptions that may not be true based on society’s view on them. Oppression is where people disempower others and make them feel less. Interpreters can harm deaf consumers because they can hold the power to oppress them.
What is the pathological view and cultural view on deaf individuals/groups?
There are people who view deaf people as disabled and imperfect, needing to be ‘fixed.’ The cultural view of deaf people is that they are viewed normal, capable human beings encountering life.
What is the harm of reciprocity of perspective for an interpreter?
Reciprocity of perspective is where an individual sees the world in their own frames and assuming others are just like them. This can harm interpreters by having the interpreter not fully be able to understand the consumer’s perspective, causing to be closed minded.
What is audism?
It is a negative stigma towards anyone who does not hear. It limits individuals, similar to racism and sexism.
How does audism affect Deaf people?
It causes the public to have a negative viewpoint towards the community, disempowering them, making them feel like cant do anything to change situations, violence, and privilege/equality.
How might an interpreter oppress a deaf or hearing client?
One way an interpreter can oppress their client is by being closed minded and not putting themselves into consumer’s perspective.
Discuss the relationship between power, status, and oppression.
Oppression is where an individual has power than others and making those empower-less (limited). Power is has oppression within it. It is people who have more privilege than others and can oppress others. As for status, if you are a higher class, it can influence oppression towards others who may be less.
Why is it important to understand the different concepts in this chapter?
It is important to be able to understand deaf people’s perspective because it allows the interpreter to have an open mind, to cause no oppression genuinely provide for the consumer.
