Ch. 50 Terminology Flashcards
Aldosterone
secreted from adrenal cortex; Water regulation and affect how kidneys work
ADH
made in hypothalamus; stored in posterior pituitary. Moves to kidneys to help regulate H2O
Carbonic anhydrase
enzyme that speeds up the combining of CO2 and water to form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid dissociates into H molecule the bicarb. H molecule makes urine acidic (acidity kills the bacteria–> prevents UTI). Bicarb stored or later use. Aldosterone–> from adrenal cortex. Holds onto Na, H20, and excretes K+.
filtration
filters substances through kidneys
nephron
functional unit of kidneys. If they die off, kidney function declines.
reabsorption
body taking back some filtered items and putting back into circulation
Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS)
occurs in kidneys
Secretion
gets rid of substances
