Ch 5 - Training Transfer Flashcards
Training Transfer
Trainee’s ability to effectively and continually applying what they learned in training to their jobs
Generalization
Trainee’s ability to apply learned capabilities to work problems that are similar to, but not identical, to problems/situations encountered in learning environment
Maintenance
Process of continuing to use newly acquired capabilities over time
Trainee Characteristics Factors for Successful Transfer
Motivation and ability both needed for transfer to occur
Training Design Factors for Successful Transfer
Meaningful material Opportunities to practice Feedback Learning Objectives Program Organization and physical features of training site
Work Environment Factors for Successful Transfer
Manager Support Peer support Tech support Climate for transfer Opportunity to use newly acquired capabilities on job
Do you need to consider transfer for project?
Yes - Trainee characteristics and work environment are part of the needs assessment
Theory of Identical Elements
Transfer of training occurs when what is being learned in the training session is identical to what the trainee has to perform on the job
Near Transfer
Trainees’ ability to apply learned capabilities exactly to work situation
Far Transfer
Trainees’ ability to apply learned capabilities to the work environment, even though the work environment is not identical to that of the training session
Training Designs for Near Transfer
Teach specific concepts/procedures
Trainees should be given explanation as to differences between training tasks and work tasks
Trainees should be encouraged to focus only on important differences between training tasks and work tasks
Behaviors/skills trainees learn in program should contribute to effective performance
Training Designs for Far Transfer
Program should teach general concepts and broad principles
Trainees should be made aware of examples from experiences that are similar to those emphasized in training so connections can be made among effective strategies
Program should emphasize general principles might be applied to greater set of contexts than those presented in training
What does research say about self-management and transfer?
Trainees exposed to self management strategies exhibit higher levels of transfer of behavior and skills than those without
How managers can encourage use of new skills
Communicate expectations to trainees
Provide encouragement and resources needed to apply training
Participate as trainer
Facilitate transfer through reinforcement - use action plans
