common word patterns
V stands for vowel
C stands for consonant
1) vc - short vowel am, it, up with exceptions or
2) cvc - medial vowel is short man, pet, lip, tot, bum
3) cvcc - vowel is short balk, cost, film confusing to use consonant digraph a that make one sound like bath, fish
4) ccvc- most start with consonant blend brat, clap, skip short vowel
5) cvvc - many have vowel digraph bait, team, goat (one sound)

stages of spelling development
1) precommunicative - no understanding that letters represent sounds, draws pictures or squiggles, no alphabetic principle
2) semiphonetic - attempts to use letters to represent sounds but sound-symbol relationships are poorly developed, does not assign at least one letter to each sound (banana is baa)
3) phonetic - letters represent sounds, at least one letter is assigned to each sound, often don’t choose the right letter or out of order, students in semiphonetic and phonetic stages sound be encouraged to write ( I lik two flii a kitt is I like to fly a kite)
4) transitional - knows most orthographic features and mistakes happen when word has several possible spellings or Long a sound, easy to read (firefiters or bildings)
5) conventional - almost all correct mistakes happen with new words with irregular spellings, can recognize when the spelling doesn’t look right
