3 levels or systems that classify reading comprehension skills
literal, inferential, evaluative
literal comprehension
ability of the reader to understand the surface meaning of the text
these questions have verifiable answers in the book/text
examples: identifying explicitly stated main ideas, details, sequence of events, cause-and-effect relationship, story grammar like plot events, characters, setting, conflict, resolution (IF CLEARLY STATED)
inferential comprehension
ability of the reader to interpret what he or she has read
these answers are not in the text - reader must speculate based on the surface meaning
examples: inferring main idea, make comparisons, cause and effect, draw conclusions, make generalizations, predict using evidence from text, infer theme
evaluative comprehension
ability of the reader to make judgements about what he or she has read
answers to these questions are not in the text
examples: recognizing instances of bias, unsupported assumptions, propaganda, faulty reasoning, distinguishing fact from opinion, judging content, characters, use of language, analyzing themes
