Q

3 tiers of general academic vocabulary

A

1) simple words that most children know without instruction, used every day (flower, rain, water)
2) more difficult words that appear in several contexts – across two or more areas of study (peninsula, territory, nautical, climate, tropical)
3) most difficult because they are specific to only one domain or area of study (unicellular, protozoa, amoeba). should be taught as part of that content area instruction, not vocab instruction alone
