contextual redefinition
uses the context surrounding the target word and the power of cooperative learning
especially effective when teaching words from a story in a basal reader or from a chapter is a social studies or science text
example: teacher searches for word in a text, finds multiple sentences where the word appears and puts in on a worksheet, students write the definition independently first then work in groups of three to come up with a second definition, teacher displays the sentence where the word appears and whole class discusses, teacher asks volunteers to read their definition, teacher selects accurate one
word consciousness
interest in words and their meanings
semantic maps
also called word maps or semantic webs, diagrams
useful in prereading instruction because they teach the meaning and activate prior knowledge
effective tool for teacher guided discussion about a word
semantic feature analysis
good teaching activity for set of words that share at least one characteristic
teacher creates a grid or matrix that identifies the traits of the target words, children place a + or - under each trait the word shares
