Ch 5 Learning Flashcards
The tendency of a new stimulus that is similar to the original conditioned stimulus to elicit a response that is similar to the conditioned response
Stimulus generalization
Process of learning to respond to certain stimuli and not others
Stimulus discrimination
A propensity for learning particular kinds of associations over others
Bio Preparedness
Procedure for changing the relationship between a conditioned stimulus and its conditioned response
Counter conditioning
Reduces the frequency of an operant behavior
Punishment
Always weakens behavior;
Touch hot iron>hand it burned>no longer touch hot irons
Positive punishment
A systematic, relatively, permanent change in behavior that occurs through experience
Learning
Control of a response (fear) is shifted from an inborn stimulus (shot) to a new stimulus (office)
Classical conditioning
Performing well in competition (behavior) becomes associated with getting awards (consequences)
Operant conditioning
Produces a naturally occurring response without prior learning
Unconditioned stimulus
An unlearned response that is automatically elicted by the unconditional stimulus
Unconditional response
A previously neutral stimulus that eventually elicts a conditioned response after being paired with the U.S
Conditioned stimulus
Learned response to the conditioned stimulus that occurs after being paired at the CS and US
Conditioned response
CS-US paired
Acquisition; graph goes up
CS alone
Extinction; graph goes down
Nothing happens
Rest
CS alone
Spontaneous recovery
Occurs when a person observes and imitates behavior
Observable learning
First to identify observable learning
Albert bandura
What are the 4 processes of observable learning?
- Attention
- Retention-encoding and removal of memory
- Motor reproduction
- (Vicarious) reinforcement-watch someone else get rewarded for behavior, person then copies that behavior
Learning that occurs despite no punishment or reward
Latent learning
When an animal discovered a sudden understanding to a solution
Insight learning
Tendency to refer back to instructive behavior
Instructive drift
A theory of learning that focuses on observable behavior
Behaviorism
Learning that occurs when an organism makes a connection, or an association, between two events
Associative learning
Initial learning of the connection between the US and CS when these two stimuli are paired
Acquisition
