Dissatisfaction = (V_want - V_have)*(V_importance)

-Variety
-Identity
-Significance
-Autonomy
-Feedback
Why are even the most satisfied employees not satisfied every minute they spend at their job?
Some tasks may be monotonous or frustrating, but overall they are satisfied with their job on average. Not all work can be pleasant and/or satisfying.
What work value has the highest correlation with job satisfaction?
The work itself
Emotional Labour
Hiding emotions to show emotions needed for higher task performance
Emotional Contagion
The spread of emotions (good or bad) among people.
What is the relationship between Job Satisfaction and Job Performance?
Moderate positive correlation
What is the relationship between Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment?
Strong positive correlation
Which of these is NOT part of the Job Characteristics Theory?
Variety, identity, autonomy, valence, feedback
Valence
Variety
The degree to which a job requires different activities and skills (not doing the same thing all the time)
Identity
The degree to which a job offers completion of a whole, identifiable piece of work. Employees can see “the fruit of their efforts”
What are the 2 questions most employees ask about their supervisors?
-Can they help the employee attain the things they value?
-Is the supervisor likeable?
Will promotions lead to higher job satisfaction for every employee?
No. Some employees spend years chasing a promotion; however, other employees do not want the increased responsibility and work hours that come with a promotion.
Significance
The degree to which a job really matters and impacts society as a whole
Autonomy
The degree to which a job provides freedom, independence, and discretion to perform the work. Employees with high autonomy jobs can control the timing, scheduling, and sequencing in work activities.
Feedback
The degree to which doing a job provides information about how well the employee is doing.
Growth Need Strength
The degree to which employees desire to develop themselves further
Moderators
Influence the strength of relationships between variables (eg. growth need strength is a moderator for the relationship between levels of core job characteristics and satisfaction with the work itself)
Affective Events Theory
A theory that describes how workplace events can generate emotional reactions that impact work behaviours
What 3 critical psychological states make work satisfying?
-Meaningfulness of Work
-Responsibility for Outcomes
-Knowledge of Results
