Ch. 5 Carbs and Lipids Flashcards
What are carbohydrates?
compounds that contain at least two hydroxyl groups
What are the 5 functions of carbs?
Energy source, external protection, cell recognition, nucleic acids, glycoproteins and glycolipids
What are the 3 types of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, polysaccharides
What are monosaccharides? Give 3 examples
the simplest form of carbs, glucose, fructose, galactose
What are characteristics of oligosaccharides?
intermediate in size, composed of a few monosaccharide units, found in various biological processes
What are polysaccharides?
complex carbohydrates, consist of long chains of monosaccharide units, serve as energy storage or structural components
How many carbon atoms are usually in monosaccharides?
3 to 7
What are trioses?
monosaccharides with 3 carbons
What are the smallest monosaccharides? How do they differ?
Glyceraldehyde & dihydroxyacetone; they share the same formula, but differ in carbonyl group position
What are aldehydes?
organic compounds that contain a carbonyl group at the end
What are ketones?
organic compounds that contain a carbonyl group in the middle
What are pentoses?
monosaccharides with 5 carbons
What is the best known pentose? What are some characteristics of them?
ribose; can be open-chain or cyclic (furanose)
What are hexoses?
monosaccharides with 6 carbons
