What effect does lack of close human contact have on institutionalized children?
Causes them to develop learning delays and problems forming attachments to others. In Rene Spitz study, 1/3 of children even died from lack of human contact. Children who lack a caring environment in general develop their mental, physical, and emotional skills at a much slower pace.
What ways are total institutions different from other agents of socialization?
Setting where ppl are isolated from the rest of society for a set period of time and are subject to tight control. This differs from the process found in most other settings. Individual is denied freedoms of outside world & must resocialize, where personality and social behavior is weakened so they can confirm to new patterns of behavior
