CH 46 Urinary Elimination Flashcards
what is the normal range of urine production?
1-2 L
Erythropoeitin
produced by kidneys essential to RBC production
renin-angiotensin system
Renin functions as an enzyme to convert angiotensinogen (a substance synthesized by the liver) into angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is converted to angiotensin II in the lungs.
Angiotensin II causes vasoconstriction and water retention
dysuria
painful urination
cystitis
bladder inflammation
UTI symptoms
burning sensation when urinating, irritation of the bladder, urgency, frequency, and incontinence
stress incontinence
occurs with sneezing/ lifting - common in women after childbirth
overflow incontinence
constant dribbling of urine - diabetic neuropathy/ prostatic hyperplasia/ uterine prolapse
reflex incontinence
large amount of urine retained - CNS diseases like multiple sclerosis
nephrostomy
tubes that drain directly from the renal pelvis - patients need teaching about signs of infection and care
What characteristics should we assess about urine?
color
odor
amount
clarity
what is the normal pH range of urine?
4.5-8
What does the BUN serum test/ creatinine/ creatinine clearance test indicate?
kidney function and GFR
phenazopyridine
urine will be orange
