Ch. 41 - Anaerobic G- bacteria Flashcards
Bacteroides fragalis
Anaerobic G-b
Pleomorphic
Can resemble mixed culture
Adherence –> polysaccharide capsule and fimbriae
Cytotoxin enzymes: tissue destruction, O2 immunity
Toxin: diarrhea with intestinal epithelial changes and inflammation
G- Anaerobes
Colonize upper resp, GI, UG
Stabilize resident flora
Prevent pathogen colonization
Aid in digestion
Disease in sterile body sites (polymicrobial)
G-b: Bacteroides ** Fusobacterium Porphorymonas Prevotella
G-c:
Viellonella
Prevotella
Very small anaerobic G-b
Pigmented and non are bike susceptible
Fusobacterium
Elongated anaerobic G-b with pointed ends
Bacteroides
Anaerobic G-b
Growth stimulated by 20% bile
Typical G- cell wall
Little to no endotoxin activity
Viellonella
Anaerobic G-c
Usually contaminant
Porphorymonas
Anaerobic G-b
Pigmented are vile susceptible
Anaerobic G- diseases
Resp infections Brain abscesses Intra-abdominal infections Gynecological infections Skin and soft tissue infections
Many produce beta lactamases
