L. monocytogenes
G+b CAT + (unlike Gp. B Strep) CAMP + Weak beta-hem Facultative (salt) Intracellular (avoid humoral; need T-cell)
Tumbling motility
Food and water contaminant (dairy, meat, poultry, raw veggies)
Exotoxin listeriolysin O (bacterial spread)
Listeria monocytogenes diseases
Passes thru GI lining to liver and spleen –> disseminated disease
Neonatal: early onset (in utero) - abortion, stillbirth, premie late onset (2-3 weeks) - meningitis
Adult: Flu-like (also in pregnant women)
Meningitis
Bacteremia
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
G+b Non-spore forming Microaerophilic & CO2 NaCl tolerant Alpha-hem
Zoonotic
Capsule
Neuramidase - attachment and penetration of epithelial cells
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae diagnosis
CAT - and MOT - (unlike Listeria)
H2S +
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae disease
Erysipeloid - voilet, pruritic, inflammatory lesion on finger & hands. Pus uncommon (unlike Strep)
Septicemic disease (rare; associated with endocarditis)
