Ch. 4 Sec. 3 Flashcards
Law of Conservation of Energy
States that energy cannot be created or destroyed
Energy that can’t be broken down or created
Ex. Energy can only be converted from one to another or transferred from one place to another
Mechanical Energy
Sum of the potential energy and kinetic energy of the objects in a system
Potential energy and kinetic energy added up to equal the objects in a system
Ex. Gravitational potential energy, elastic potential energy, and kinetic energy of objects
Power
Rate at which energy is converted; measured in watts
Watts is what it si measured in and it is the rate of energy converted
F Ex. P= - T
Mechanical Transformations
Sum of kinetic energy and potential energy
Add K.E. and P.E. together
Ex. Falling, projectile, swings
Calories
Unit used to measure how much energy you get from foods.
Energy from food
Ex. 1 calorie = 4,180j
Other Energy Transformations
Effect of friction – friction and air is distance convert some to thermal energy
The friction effect where friction and air is thermal energy converted
Ex. Friction, electrical energy, potential energy
