Ch.5 Sec. 2 Flashcards
Conduction
Thermal energy through matter by direct contact of particles
T.E matter direct contact
Ex. Touch Snow
Convection
Thermal energy fluid by the movements of warmer objects
T.E. fluid in warmer objects
Ex. Warmer particles expand; cooler particles close
Radiation
Transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
Transferring of electromagnetic waves
Ex. Light, microwave
Thermal Insulator
Material which thermal energy moves slowly
Thermal energy moves slower in it
Ex. Wood, Gases, Air
Thermal Conductor
The ability of a material to allow the flow of heat from it’s warmer surface through the material of its cooler service.
A materials ability to flow it’s heat from the surface that is warm through the cooler surface material
Ex. Car sitting in the sun
How do convection currents work?
Created by temperature differences and is the movement of groups of molecules
What happens to Sun’s radiation as it hits Earth?
It is either reflected, absorbed or transmitted
How does radiation occur? Move through solids? Liquids? Gasses?
It depends on the color and type of material. It makes liquids evaporate. It makes solid very hot. And it makes gases warm
