Ch 3: Water and Life Flashcards
What is a polar covalent bond?
unequal distributions of electrons
What is a polar molecule?
unequal sharing of electrons and shape
What are the four emergent properties of water that contribute to Earth’s suitability of life?
cohesive behavior, abilitiy to moderate temperature, expansion upon freezing, and versatility as a solvent
What is cohesion?
the linkages between water fromhydrogen bonds
What results from cohesion?
surface tension
How does water moderate temperature?
water absorbs heat from air and releases stored heat to air that is cooler
What is kinetic energy?
energy of motion
Temperature equals
average kinetic energy
Thermal energy equals
totals kinetic energy
Thermal enegy in transfer equals
heat
What is specific heat?
the amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost for 1g of a substance to change its temperature by 1degrees celsius
What is calorie?
the amount of heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1g of water by 1 degree celsius
What is heat of vaporization?
quantity of heat a liquid must absorb for it to evaporate/vaporize
What is a solution?
homogeneous mixture of two + substance
What is a solvent?
dissolving agent of a solution
