Social structure
A socially defined position in a group or society
Status
The behavior expected of someone occupying a particular status
Role
Assigned according to standards that are beyond a person’s control
Ex: race, sex, age, family heritage
Ascribed status
A status acquired by someone on the basis of some special skill, knowledge, or ability
Achieved status
Plays the greatest role in shaping a person’s life and determining his or her social identity
Master status
Different roles attached to a single status
Role set
A situation that occurs when fulfilling the expectations of one status makes it difficult to fulfill the expectations of another status
Role conflict
A situation that occurs when a person has difficulty meeting the expectations of a single status
Role strain
The process that people go through to detach from a role that has been central to their self-identity
Role exit
A system of statuses, roles, values, and norms that is organized to satisfy one or more of the basic needs of society
Social institution
an individual, group, or societal interaction undertaken in an effort to receive a reward in return for actions
Exchange
the idea that if you do something for someone, that person owes you something in return
Reciprocity
a theory that holds that people are motivated by self-interests in their interactions with others
Exchange theory
interaction that occurs when two or more people or groups oppose each other to achieve a goal that only one can attain
