ch 3-Prokaryotic Cell Flashcards
what sets Prokaryotic Cells apart
they lack a membrane bound nucleus
what domains are prokaryotic cells
Archaea and Eubacteria
plasma membrane
all cells are surrounded by a plasma membrane, which consists of a phospholipid bilayer, boundary that separates the living contents of the cell from the surrounding envirnment
-regulates entrance and exist into and out of the cytoplasm
cytoplasm
a semifluid medium inside the cell composed of water, salts, and dissolved organic molecules; plasma membrane
cell wall
form of protection, outside of the plasma membrane
capsule
in some bacteria, a gelatinous sheath that further surrounds the cell wall
flagella
in some bacteria, long tail like things which are composed of subunits of the protein flagellin; rotate like propellors, allowing the bacteria to move rapidly
fimbriae/ pilus
in some bacteria, help attach to an appropriate surface
nucleoid
a single chromosome located within a region of the cytoplasm; not surrounded by a membrane
plasmids
small rings of DNA located within the cytoplasm and contain small amounts of genetic info
ribosomes
smaller than eukaryotic, protein synthesis
